SharePoint and Office 2010 PowerPoint Files—Not a good mix

| No TrackBacks

I tried to upload a new Office 2010 PowerPoint document to my SharePoint 2007 server and I kept getting “Fail” on the upload. I installed SharePoint 2010 and after having discovered that you have to install the client Office 2010 software on the server to get it to accept bulk uploads I discovered that it too won’t accept certain PPTx files.

When uploading a single PPTx file, SharePoint begins the upload and then reports "Failed" in the status window. No other message appears in the event logs. Other files seem to upload correctly.

After some experimentation I discovered that if the PPTx has imbedded videos (not just links to videos but Office 2010 imbedded videos) the upload fails. This is a bug. I would post it to Connect but they don't accept SharePoint bugs.

I'm still open to a work-around. AFAIAC this makes SharePoint useless for archiving my PPTx files and courseware. Back to square one.

Another point: When uploading dozens of documents using the "multiple file" drag-and-drop approach I notice that not all are uploaded the first time. I have had to return to each folder to determine which files were uploaded and repeat the process on those left behind.

Folks, this is not what I call a professional application. It needs far better error reporting functionality.
